Gertrud Arndt came in Winter 1923/1924 to the Bauhaus in Weimar to study architecture. After a pre-course, her journey did not take her to the architectural section as initially planned but to the weaving section of Bauhaus. There, she designed among other things the famous Bauhaus carpet No. 2. With its 192 handknotted ordered squares, it was considered as one of the masterpieces of Bauhaus in Weimar.
The original carpet decorated the director’s office of Walter Gropius, which served at the same time as showroom for the Bauhaus works that were created and displayed as a comprehensive architectural artwork.
During the research for the new edition the drafts and wool samples of a second carpet from Gertrud Arndt were discovered in the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin, the carpet No. 1. The combination of colours within this carpet is a draft of the year 1924. Only one handknotted carpet was produced for Eberhardt Thost, a ship owner from Hamburg.
The reedition of both Bauhaus carpets was commissioned on the basis of the original wool samples by the company Designercarpets from Lörrach, Southern Germany, in close collaboration with the Bauhaus Archive Berlin and the heirs of Gertrud Arndt, on the basis of the original wool samples. The reeditions of both carpets are knotted in pure new wool and entirely handmade.
